After living in Australia for 7 years we had decided
with great difficulty that we needed to return to the USA for a while.
Reflecting on all we accomplished and experienced while living there
we suddenly realized we'd not seen the Outback. You can't go to Australia
and not see the Outback - it makes up about 80% of the country! Seeking
to correct this serious deficit in our travel experience we set out
to take the trip of a lifetime. Little did we know this was to become
the first of many to come.
Gone Walkabout in New South Wales
We
started our vacation by quitting our job, packing up the house, selling
off belongs we could no longer use and becoming gypsies in our Mitsubishi
Pajero (Montero) 4WD for the next 3 weeks. Once we were jobless and
homeless, a great burden was lifted and we were ready to enjoy the
Australian countryside properly.
Our 1996 Pajero GLS 3500 is stock standard. For a previous trip we
had added a wire cargo screen for safety. The
rear seats were removed and we rented a Engal refirigerator from Northshore
4WD. This unit with the wire basket made it easy to keep foods cold
during the day and to unload into the cabin fridge at night. The Pajero
has a handy 12V outlet and tie down hook standard in the back.
We had on a previous tour taken in some 4WD driver training with Vic at Great Divide Tours. Under Vic's expert tutorage, we learned what the vehicle and driver were capable of doing, and what they are not. We were not looking to get 'mud on the roof' on this tour, but the training provided a level of confidence and competence to keep us out of trouble.
