The 1/2 day tour also took to some rock bluff providing an excellent vantage point overlooking the 100 mile swamp. The swamp looked pretty dry from where we were, but under a crust of only 6 to 8 inches is water or mud.Our top gun tour guide, Steve, was very knowledgable in the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area. He also showed great humor with kids despite Nic pestering him with 10,000 questions. Thanks again Steve. |
We learned how to locate water in the dry outback by choosing which kind of tree to dig near. We learned the difference between the male and female wallaroo by examining only the skull. |
The Sunset Tour Outback sunsets - fruit and cheese platter - fine champagne and orange juice. We sat atop a red rock bluff overlooking a vast valley clear to the Newcastle Range some 100 miles distant (try that in Los Angeles). The sun slowly set bringing an enchanting twilight and eerie backlight to the eucalypt forest below. We also stopped at the 100 Mile Swamp (being 100 miles from the homestead) and were treated to a view of a mob of grazing eastern grey kangaroos. On the way to the lava tube for bat viewing we sighted a shy and elusive swamp wallaby. This is probably the most underrated tour at Undara. A must for those who enjoy a most spectacular sunset. |
