Leg 2 - Onward to SedonaToday we start our Arizona holiday properly. We picked up 10 pounds of carrots (more on this later) and continue across the Colorado River into Arizona and take the first exit which is old Route 66 to the Oatman gold mine ghost town. At Oatman we found the wild burros lazily wandering down the main street.
There were 3 or 4 baby burros that were no more than 6 weeks old about as well. The burros graciously accepted our offer of carrots in exchage for a pat. We visited the old jail, a small gold mine and had a cold sarsaparilla in the old hotel. Hollywood types would stay here and the hotel has a Clark Gable and Carole Lombard honeymoon suite. You can still book a room in this hotel for a donation of about $35.00
There was some hubbub in front of the hotel. It seems there were 3 sherrifs in town that day and they couldn't agree on who was the real sherrif. To the tune of Ghost Riders, a shootout ensued and all 3 fell down 'dead'. After the show, the hat was passed for the Shriners fund. Dinner was found in Flagstaff at Granny's Closet steak house on the main road. It was a visually interesting place (lotsa neat stuff to look at) and very different from the usual national chains. Arriving in Sedona via the southern entrace through Oak Creek, we were treated to a brilliant sunset hitting the rocks. If We Had More Time...We would have had more of a look around Flagstaff. Perhaps another time will bring us this way again.. We would have lingered and enjoyed the Sedona sunset a bit longer. Later in the week there was a forest fire that cast a haze across the valley muting sunsets for the next several days.
