Leg 4 - Grand Canyon

What can one say about the Grand Canyon other than WOW! I can only imagine the reactions of the pioneers crossing the county in their wagons and horseback when they encountered this canyon.

The canyon is some 277 miles in length and runs generally east-west across Northern Arizona to the California and Nevada state lines. The Colorado river tamed by Hoover dam at the downstream end and Glen Canyon dam upstream which controls the amount of ersoion and silt washing downstream to Hoover dam.

We challenged the kids and ourselves to write a few words about the Grand Canyon. Here is what they came up with. These are done in the style of Cinquain (one of the activities in the Junior Ranger booklet).

Cinquain
A 5 lined unrhyming poem (1-2-3-4-1)- 1 word on the top row, 2 on the second, 3 on the third, 4 on the fourth and one on the last.
Line 1 names the subject
Line 2 describes it
Line 3 uses 3 action words
Line 4 - 4 word phrase or thought
Line 5 - another name to sum it all up.

Meteor Crater

This was one of our finds on this trip. We had not planned on visiting Meteor Crater, but we found out this was the giant crater (nearly a mile across) that was featured in the movie Starman.

On the way to Meteor Crater, we happened upon an old Route 66 classic - Twin Arrows. It was closed and rather run down, a testiment to the past and to the general reliabiity of modern automobiles.

Deer Farm

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm on I-40 between Williams and Flagstaff was another pleasant find and welcome break from all the driving. The kids were most entertained by feeding the deer and amused by the deer trying to eat my shoelaces. They also racked up stacks of points that day. Mom got 100 points for being the first to notice the buffalo grazing quietly in its pen.

Grand Canyon

We arrived at the Grand Canyon on Friday just before sunset. We stopped at the vista in time to see this beautiful sunset painting the rocks. Our camera were woefully inadequate to take in the beauty of it all so you'll just have to go see it yourself or rent a video.

The park has a 25 MPH limit near the rim. I suspect this is why - our photo of 2 elk at night. Both had big racks and were at least an even match for the minivan. Float your mouse over the picture to "illuminate" the elk.

We stayed in the Yavapai Lodge which is out in the woods rather than On The Rim. The cinderblock construction and furnishings was a bit like a Motel 6.

Travel Tips

Go early to the visitor center to get your Junior Ranger booklet and Discovery Kit (backpack, field book, compass etc). These are available only about 4 days a week incuding Thursday and Sunday but not Friday and Saturday.

We closed our trip to the Grand Canyon with lunch at the El Tovar - the first hotel built on the rim. The fare was excellent and the service first class all the way. If you want to stay in this hotel, you probably need to book it 6 to 12 months in advance.
