Leg 6 - Calico, California

For our final night we Calico Ghost Town rented a Calico Ghost Town patchcabin at the ghost town campground. We were there on a Monday night so it really was a ghost town - we had the whole campground to ourselves. It was perfect for taking the kids snipe hunting, star watching, and telling ghost stories.

The cabin was a basic log cabin with a double bed and bunk bed fo the kids. The campground has 6 cabins which are located near the toilet and shower block. At only $28 per night which includes admission, we would have spent $18 on admission alone, so the night cost only $10!

Califo Kids posingThroughout the park are these photo spots where the kids (and adults) can stike silly poses. I don't think we missed any.

Calico kids in Mystery ShackThe haunted shack was a source of great entertainment and intrigue for the kids. Lori had plugged ears from a cold and suffered from vertigo and disorientation in this topsy-turvy attraction.

Calico mine trainThe park had a number of minor (miner?) attractions such as the mine shaft to walk though decoarated with dioramas of miners at work and play with audio interpretation. There was also a short train ride - kids love train rides - with some good narative about the town.

Calico Glass HouseWood was scarce in the area, but the town has 22 saloons for a population of only 1,200. It looks like glass bottles where easy to come by.Calico plaque to Walter Knott

Calico town was donated by Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm to the San Beradino County in 1966. It burnt several times in the 1800's, then after 100 years the latest being 2001. The upper 1/3 of the town was reconstructed from old photos.

Baker, CA

At the edge of the Mohave Desert National Preservation Area, the tallest thermometer marks the location of the local National Park Service visitor information center. Stop in and ask the ranger in the information office for a kids Junior Ranger activity book.
