Carmel-by-the-Sea
Pacific Grove
No fall or winter trip through Monterey would be complete without stopping to see the wonder of the Monarch Butterfly winter migration home. The population was down more than 50% this year, likely due to disappearing food sources of milkweed which the local farmers try to eradicate as a weed.
The close up photo was taken with our Kodak LS443 digital camera shooting through a telescope that was set up by the local docent.
A larger winter population can also be found in a stand of eucalyptus trees further south at Pismo Beach

We headed toward the beach and the Pacific Grove Municipal golf course where we found this old lighthouse at Point Pinos.
Point Pinos is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, operating and guarding the coast since 1855.

Pebble Beach Golf Course
We just had to stop in at the fameous Pebble Beach golf course. One of 3 stunningly beautiful courses in the resort, the course and village are only accessible by a private section of the 17 Mile Road where the friendly gate guards collect $8.50 toll. The drive along the beach was stunning, however.
The course was booked out for the day after Thanksgiving, so we stopped in at the club house to check out the cafes and resturaunts, the course pro shop and starters shop.
Carmel by the Sea
On a recommendation from a friend, we found Jack London's in Carmel by the Sea for a late lunch. We had a little trouble finding them as the internet guides where we found their listings had them at their old address on San Carlos while they are currently (2004) located on Dolores between 5th and 6th streets, just one street over and just across the street from the Hog's Breath cafe.
We had quite a tasty lunch and the beer was cold. Then Lori took me shopping.
